UPDATE: President Zelenskyy of Ukraine announced Russia was, “trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth. Completely.” Russia’s recent strikes in Ukraine are targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. Deadline for collection has been extended to Friday, October 21.
St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church is the cultural and spiritual Center for the Ukrainian community in the East Village, Manhattan. Shaaray Tefila has been working with them since the start of the war in Ukraine to collect aid supplies from various New York Interfaith Communities to send overseas to the people directly impacted by this conflict. This humanitarian aid drive is designed to save lives and alleviate suffering of these vulnerable refugee and civilian populations by meeting their life-saving needs.
Jewish tradition does not give us the option to feign ignorance. Torah offers us the means of understanding the universe and our place in it. We have the tools we require to understand how we are to treat others, ourselves, and the earth. We are supposed to love our neighbor as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18), pursue justice (Deuteronomy 16:20), and care for the orphan, the widow, the poor, and the stranger (Exodus 22:20-24). We are told that we are stewards of the earth and charged to care for all living creatures (Genesis 1:28). We have obligations, and Judaism urges us to fulfill our obligations.
On the High Holy Days, may we all choose to lessen the harness of the decree by focusing on teshuvah, tefillah, and tzedakah.
