Pride Shabbat w/ Rabbi Ariel Tovlev

Please join us in person and online for a wonderful Pride celebration as we learn from special guest Rabbi Ariel Tovlev about gender beyond the binary in Judaism.

Rabbi Ariel Tovlev (pronouns: he/him or they/them) is a poet, educator, public speaker, and ritualist. As only the second out trans student admitted to and the fourth out trans rabbi ordained by the Reform seminary, Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, Rabbi Tovlev intimately knows what it means to be a path-builder. Before becoming a rabbi, he double majored in Creative Writing and Psychology at the University of British Columbia, and received a Master’s of Fine Arts in Poetry from Chapman University. During his time at HUC-JIR, he extended his studies to receive Master’s of Jewish Education. Rabbi Tovlev has taught on gender beyond the binary in Judaism across the country. They served as the Director of the second Trans Jews are Here Convening at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, the largest gathering of trans Jews in the world. His writing has been featured in several publications, including Mishkan Ga’avah: Where Pride Dwells and Prophetic Voices: Renewing and Reimagining Haftarah. Rabbi Tovlev lives with his spouse Cantor Ze’evi Tovlev (they/them) in the Maryland suburbs of DC.
