For our first study session on Yom Kippur Day, we welcome  Rabbi Tom Alpert, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Etz Chaim in Franklin, Massachusetts, who will lead us on the topic, Yes, Jonah, He Lived in a Whale: Reflections on what the Book of Jonah Means in our Lives.

About Rabbi Alpert:

Rabbi Alpert practiced for several years as a lawyer before deciding to enter rabbinical school in his early forties. He received his ordination from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in New York in 2000, and he served congregations in the Boston area until his retirement in 2024. The last twelve of those years were spent at Temple Etz Chaim in Franklin, Massachusetts, where he is now Rabbi Emeritus. Since his retirement, Tom has returned to the practice of law with the firm of Peer, Gan, Gisler & Favreau, LLC, where he represents clergy in employment matters.

Rabbi Alpert has been actively involved in the Central Conference of American Rabbis, where he is currently the chair of the Ethics Process Review Committee, which proposes changes in the Conference’s Ethics Code. He also serves as the coordinator for the Conference for the filing of amicus curiae briefs in court cases.

He and his wife Eileen Hagerty have three children. One of them, Andrew Alpert, is the Program Manager at Temple Shaaray Tefila.
