For our second study session on Yom Kippur Day, we welcome Rabbi Haley Siegel, Rabbi in Residence at Temple Israel of the City of New York.
Our rabbis established the rituals of Yom Kippur as a sacred pathway toward confronting the truth within our souls. Generations later, Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone offers another doorway into what can happen when we neglect our potential for goodness and moral growth.
Drawing upon High Holiday liturgy from our Machzor and a classic episode of The Twilight Zone, we will explore how to evaluate our actions and conduct over the past year with honesty and compassion. No previous knowledge is required—just openness to discovering the fascinating intersection of Jewish texts and popular culture!
About Rabbi Siegel
Rabbi Hayley Siegel serves as Rabbi in Residence at Temple Israel of the City of New York. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Jewish Studies from Trinity College and received her Rabbinic Ordination from the Academy for Jewish Religion, along with a M.A. in Jewish Education from Gratz College.
For the past five years, she has taught Temple Israel’s “Introduction to Judaism” course, guiding learners, seekers, and the curious through an immersive exploration of Jewish belief, practice, and belonging. She also teaches regularly on biblical women, Jewish values, and Parashat HaShavua, often exploring connections between Torah, art, pop culture, science fiction, and current events.
Rabbi Siegel and her husband Aaron are the proud parents of Maxwell and Benjamin and have been members of Temple Shaaray Tefila for over a decade. The Siegel family enjoys cheering on the Mets, playing competitive games of Scattergories, kayaking, and walking through Central Park with their dog.
