A whispered confidence. A forwarded message. A story that is true, but perhaps not ours to tell. Jewish tradition calls harmful or destructive speech lashon hara, and it takes the power of our words extraordinarily seriously.

During the four Thursdays of the Hebrew month of Elul leading up to Rosh Hashanah, we will explore classical Jewish texts alongside contemporary dilemmas from family life, friendship, the workplace, group chats, and social media. Together, we will consider what counts as lashon hara; why we are drawn to speak, share, and listen; when silence is wise and when speaking up is necessary to protect others; and how apology, accountability, and more courageous conversation can help us enter the High Holy Days ready for reflection and change.

No previous Jewish study is required, and experienced learners will find plenty to wrestle with. The sessions will build upon one another, but participants are welcome even if they cannot attend all four.
