Leah Shafritz is a fifth year cantorial student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music. She grew up in beautiful Santa Barbara, California and, more recently, lived in Boston where she earned a bachelor of music degree in vocal performance, magna cum laude, from The Boston Conservatory. After graduating, Leah worked at Congregation Sha’aray Shalom on Boston’s south shore as the youth advisor, 7th grade teacher, and music specialist, before moving to Jerusalem for the first year of the HUC-JIR Cantorial program. She has since continued the program in New York, where she served as the student cantor for two years at Port Jewish Center on Long Island, as well as a B’nai Mitzvah tutor at Shaaray Tefila. This Spring she earned her Masters of Sacred Music from HUC-JIR, and is expected to be ordained by the institution in May 2019.
Leah is very excited to spend another year at Shaaray Tefila as the Cantorial Intern, continuing to learn from the amazing clergy team and developing relationships within the community.
She lives in Long Island City with her husband, Abram.
