Ghost Guns 101 and Pending Legislation in NY State
Thursday, March 4 @5:30pm-6:30pm
Come learn about the pending NY State Legislation to address the proliferation of ghost guns. At the session, you will learn about the current efforts underway to get two ghost gun bills to become law in NY State, and what you can do to help.
This informative session is sponsored by Shaaray Tefila Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and will feature speakers from Moms Demand Action NY Chapter.
What are ghost guns?
Ghost guns are untraceable, un-serialized firearms built by unlicensed individuals absent the regulations in place for entities in the business of manufacturing firearms for retail sale. Ghost guns are not subject to background checks—so they can undermine all of our gun safety legislation if they go unchecked.
This presentation will illustrate how easy it is to obtain and assemble a ghost gun. Please be advised that the subject of this presentation may be disturbing, as you will see various gun parts, ammunition, and advertisement for firearms.
There are currently two bills addressing the issue of ghost guns in NY state. They have both passed the Senate and will now be headed to the Assembly for a vote.
Ghost guns are one of the fastest growing threats to gun safety in our country—and in our state. In 2019, police reported finding 23 ghost guns in Onondaga County (Syracuse). Before 2018, only one had ever been recovered there. And, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, demand online has only grown. Nearly 10,000 ghost guns were recovered by law enforcement nationally in 2019.
